Washington Mystics at Toronto Tempo
Opening night in Canada should bring exactly the kind of volatility we expect early in this WNBA season. Toronto enters its first regular-season game as a slight favorite, laying -1.5, with the total sitting at 159.5. That number may look a little aggressive at first glance, but elevated scoring is going to be a common theme in our early-season projections.
The officials have already tipped their hand. The whistle appears tighter than what we’re accustomed to seeing in the W, and if that carries into the regular season, totals may need to be adjusted upward quickly. More fouls mean more free throws, more disrupted defensive rhythm, and more opportunities for guards to attack before teams fully settle into half-court structure.
This matchup is a clean contrast in roster construction. Washington should have the better interior profile, led by Kiki Iriafen and Lauren Betts in the paint. The Mystics have real size, strength, and rebounding potential up front, and that frontcourt could give Toronto problems over the course of the season.
But on this night, the edge may belong to the Tempo’s guards. Toronto has a strong perimeter mix with Brittney Sykes, Marina Mabrey, Kia Nurse, and first-round pick Kiki Rice. That group gives the Tempo multiple ball-handlers, shot creators, and enough pace to make Washington uncomfortable.
Our preseason numbers have Washington slightly ahead of Toronto overall, but this is not a neutral situation. It is a wild opening night in Canada, with a new franchise, a charged building, and a guard-heavy roster built to feed off that energy.
The Mystics’ frontcourt keeps them in it, but Toronto’s backcourt makes the winning plays late.
