Swalwell Is The Man For California - Republican Opposition Confirms It

California Democrats should be rallying around Eric Swalwell right now, not shopping around for a more comfortable option.

This is not really about whether Swalwell is every Democrat’s ideal candidate. It is about the map in front of them and the risk they are sleepwalking into. California’s top-two primary system does not care about party labels. It only cares about who finishes first and second. And with Democrats badly split, the possibility of two Republicans emerging from the jungle primary is no longer some far-fetched scenario. That is exactly the kind of disaster that can happen when one party gets too complacent and too crowded at the same time.

So yes, Democrats need to get serious, and fast.

My support is behind Congressman Swalwell. Part of that is simple political reality. He has real name recognition, real fight, and a profile that can cut through a crowded field. If Democrats want to avoid an embarrassing and potentially catastrophic primary result, they need to start consolidating behind someone who can actually compete statewide and prevent the vote from splintering into a dozen self-indulgent pieces.

And the Republican reaction is making the choice even more obvious. They are reaching back to the old China story from roughly a decade ago involving Christine Fang, the suspected Chinese operative who was reported to have spent years trying to cultivate relationships with Bay Area politicians. Swalwell was briefed by the FBI, cut off contact, and no evidence ever emerged that he committed a crime or knowingly cooperated with Chinese intelligence. Yet Republicans are still trying to recycle that old saga because they know the word “China” is enough to muddy the waters for low-information voters.

That should tell Democrats something.

You do not spend that kind of energy trying to damage someone you are comfortable facing. In politics, your opponents often tell you exactly who they fear most.

This race is no longer about finding the perfect résumé or the least controversial talking points. It is about avoiding a total strategic failure. Rallying around Eric Swalwell is not just defensible. At this point, it is starting to look necessary.
