Sun at Fire - Seems Synonymous

Connecticut at Portland may not be pretty basketball, but it is absolutely interesting from a betting perspective.

These look like two historically bad teams, and there is a strange reality hanging over this matchup: losing may ultimately be better for the long-term future of both franchises. The bottom of the WNBA standings could come with a major reward if it improves draft lottery position, especially with the possibility of JuJu Watkins entering the 2027 WNBA Draft.

That is the uncomfortable backdrop.

But we are not betting draft position tonight. We are betting the current matchup, and as shocking as it sounds, Portland appears to be the right side.

The Fire are still bad. Let’s not get carried away. This is a first-year expansion team with a limited roster and plenty of flaws. But Portland has already proven it can win a game, has a legitimately strong home-court environment, and has found a way to score with some consistency in the early season.

That matters against Connecticut.

Neither team has played much defense, but Portland has at least shown offensive life. Carla Leite and Bridget Carleton have given the Fire enough scoring to be competitive, and in a matchup this weak, that may be enough. Connecticut, meanwhile, looks completely overmatched most nights and has not shown the same ability to create reliable offense.

I never thought I would be laying points with this Portland team. I certainly did not expect to be betting the Fire as a favorite this early in the season.

But here we are.

Portland is at home, has the better scoring profile, and has shown more early-season competitiveness than Connecticut. In a battle between two bottom-tier teams, that is enough.
