Miles Ahead
Olivia Miles continues to impress and has opened up a significant lead in the WNBA Rookie of the Year race.
The rookie point guard has been outstanding in Minnesota, and more importantly, she continues to show growth in areas that don't always appear in the box score. The numbers are certainly impressive. She’s scoring nearly 16 points per game and dishing out more than six assist, but those statistics only begin to tell the story.
Miles has become the engine that makes the Lynx go. Everything Minnesota does well seems to start with her decision-making, court awareness, and ability to put teammates in positions to succeed. For a rookie point guard, the level of control she already displays is remarkable.
What's perhaps most impressive is the relationship developing between Miles and head coach Cheryl Reeve. Reeve is the best coach in the WNBA and one of the greatest basketball minds in the sport. Having a point guard who essentially functions as an extension of the coaching staff on the floor is an enormous advantage. It's rare to see that level of trust and understanding develop between a coach and a rookie, yet that's exactly what appears to be happening.
In many ways, Miles already looks like another coach on the floor. She sees the game several passes ahead, understands tempo, recognizes mismatches, and consistently makes decisions that benefit the entire team rather than simply hunting her own numbers. That type of basketball maturity usually takes years to develop at the professional level.
It's one of the reasons her decision to spend an additional season at TCU looks so wise in hindsight. Playing for Mark Campbell gave her another year to grow as both a player and a leader. More importantly, it demonstrated emotional maturity and self-awareness. Many players would have rushed to the WNBA. Miles chose a path focused on long-term development, and the benefits are already obvious. This is a player who seems wise well beyond her years.
None of this is intended as criticism of Azzi Fudd, Kiki Rice, or the other talented rookies who are also making strong early impressions. Those players appear destined for tremendous success in their own right.
But through the first quarter of the season, Olivia Miles has separated herself. The Lynx are thriving. Cheryl Reeve has found the perfect floor general. And the Rookie of the Year race currently has a clear frontrunner.
Olivia Miles isn't just ahead. She's miles ahead.
