Schmuck: Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt

Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt managed to prove himself a bona fide schmuck while trying to accuse former special counsel Jack Smith of perjury.

Schmitt pressed Smith over whether he had attended a Golden State Warriors–Atlanta Hawks game in Atlanta on February 3, 2024. Smith said he had not. Schmitt treated that denial like a smoking gun and suggested Smith had lied under oath.

There was just one problem.

Smith wasn’t at the Hawks game.

He was in Maryland attending a women’s college basketball game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Maryland Terrapins.

Hawks. Hawkeyes.

Atlanta. Maryland.

That is a pretty important distinction when you are accusing someone of perjury in a Senate hearing.

This wasn’t some complicated legal disagreement buried in thousands of pages of testimony. It was a basic factual error involving two completely different basketball teams in two completely different places.

The accusation fell apart almost immediately once the actual game was identified.

If you’re going to dramatically accuse somebody of committing a felony in front of the country, maybe take a few extra seconds to make sure you know the difference between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

It was the Hawkeyes, Senator.

Not the Hawks.
