#7 UCLA v. #10 Central Florida

Central Florida versus UCLA has the right ingredients for a trendy upset conversation. At least one No. 10 seed has won a first-round game in every men’s NCAA tournament since 2010, and UCF has enough guard play and shooting to make people nervous. The Knights’ backcourt, led by Themus Fulks and Riley Kugel, gives them experience and scoring punch, and UCF can stay in almost any game if the three-point shots are falling. They have five players shooting at least 36% from deep, which gives them a real chance to hang around for a long stretch.

But this matchup still points back to UCLA.

The Bruins are getting healthier at the right time. Tyler Bilodeau and Donovan Dent are expected back at full strength, and that matters because UCLA has been playing some of its best basketball of the season lately. The Bruins have looked sharper, more connected, and more dangerous offensively as the season has moved along, and their recent form suggests they are coming into the tournament with momentum.

That is a problem for a UCF team that has looked sluggish down the stretch.

The Knights are dangerous because of the shot profile. Teams that can make threes in volume are always live in March, and UCF absolutely has the ability to make this game uncomfortable for stretches. But UCLA should be able to score plenty against a mediocre UCF defense, and that is where the separation should come. The Bruins are simply better on both ends of the floor, even if the teams are somewhat similar stylistically.

UCLA has the more reliable scoring options, the more complete roster, and the better current rhythm. UCF has enough shooting and enough experienced guard play to keep things respectable for a while, but over 40 minutes the Bruins should wear them down.

This feels like one of those games where the upset gets talked about, the underdog lands a few punches early, and then the better team gradually takes control. UCLA is healthier, sharper, and stronger on both ends. The Bruins pull away in the second half, win comfortably, and cover the number.

Pick: UCLA -5.5
