entertaining but no rings
The Indiana Fever’s backcourt is a talent overload that simply doesn’t fit. Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell are both dynamic offensive players, but each is wired to score first and facilitate second. Neither has the true instincts of a natural point guard — someone who controls tempo, limits turnovers, and gets the entire team in rhythm. Clark’s brilliance as a shooter and passer is undeniable, but the constant racing up the floor, forcing tempo, and taking risky shots is not a sustainable championship formula. She’s already one of the league leaders in missed shots and turnovers, and that will always be the case if she’s asked to run the offense full-time.
Mitchell, meanwhile, is an elite scorer in her own right — efficient, explosive, and fearless — but she also needs the ball in her hands to be her best self. Two shooting guards trying to coexist in a guard-driven league creates chaos, not chemistry. The Fever should prioritize Clark’s upside and build around her correctly, with a true point guard who can steady the game and let her thrive off the ball. Mitchell deserves a fresh start elsewhere. Until Indiana makes that move, they’ll stay fun to watch — but miles away from a championship.
