We still like Clint Allard to keep the Tritons in the Big West’s upper tier with structure, pace control, and disciplined defense. However, Wednesday looks more favorable for Fresno State: a near full roster reset, better baseline athletes, and a chance to turn the page on an embarrassing, scandal-marred season.

Tactically, the game hinges on two levers: physicality at the point of attack and late-clock shot creation. Fresno State should own more straight-line burst and second-chance potential, while UC San Diego will try to shrink possessions, wall off the paint, and win with turnover avoidance. Guard Zaon Collins is the swing piece; if he’s settled and focused, his live dribble, tempo pressure, and transition pop raise the Bulldogs’ ceiling. Jake Heidbreder, the Clemson transfer, also appears elevated—clean footwork, confident catch-and-shoots, and enough craft to keep defenses honest.
